Malaysian English "Manglish"

Found this at cari.com .....
quite funny...haha !

Manglish (or sometimes Malglish or Mangled English) is the colloquial version of the English language as spoken in Malaysia and it is a portmanteau of the word Malay and English (also possibly Mandarin and English).

The vocabulary of Manglish consists of words originating from English, Malay, Hokkien, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tamil, and to a lesser extent various other European languages, while Manglish syntax resembles southern varieties of Chinese. Also, elements of American and Australian slang have come through from imported television series.

The Malaysian Manglish is sometimes known as Rojak or Bahasa Rojak, but it differs from the Rojak language by the usage of English as the base language.

It is similar to Singlish.

History

Manglish shares substantial linguistic similarities with Singlish in Singapore, although distinctions can be made, particularly in vocabulary.

Initially, "Singlish" and "Manglish" were essentially the same language, when Singapore and Malaysia were a single geographic entity: Malaya. In old Malaya, English was the language of the British administration whilst Malay was spoken as the lingua franca of the street. Thus, even the Chinese would revert to Malay when speaking to Chinese people who did not speak the same Chinese dialect.

Theoretically, English as spoken in Malaysia is based on British English and called Malaysian English. British spelling is generally followed. However, the influence of American English modes of expression and slang is strong, particularly among Malaysian youth.

Since 1968, Malay, or Bahasa Melayu, has been the country's sole official language. While English is widely used, many Malay words have become part of common usage in informal English or Manglish. An example is suffixing sentences with lah, as in, "Don't be so worried-lah", which is usually used to present a sentence as rather light-going and not so serious, the suffix has no specific meaning. However, Chinese dialects also make abundant use of the suffix lah and there is some disagreement as to which language it was originally borrowed from. There is also a strong influence from Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, and Tamil, which are other major dialects and languages spoken in Malaysia. Manglish also uses some archaic British terms from the era of British colonisation (see "gostan" and "outstation" below).

Manglish Particles

Word Meaning Example
lah Used to affirm a statement (similar to "of course"). Frequently used at the end of sentences and usually ends with an exclamation mark (!). It is derived from and has the same meaning as the Chinese expression "啦". Don't be an idiot lah!

nah Used when giving something to another person, often in a rude or impolite way. Nah, take this!

meh Used when asking questions, especially when a person is skeptical of something. Derived from the Chinese expression "咩". Really meh?
Cannot meh?

liao Means "already" Derived from the Chinese expression "了". No stock liao.

ah Derived from the Chinese expression "啊". Used at the end of sentences, unlike meh the question is rhetorical. Also used when asking a genuine question. Besides that, some people use it when referring to a subject before making a (usually negative) comment. Why is he like that ah?
Is that true ah?
My brother ah, always disturbs me!

lor Used when explaining something. Derived from the Chinese expression "囉". Like that lor!

d/dy/ady/edy/ridy/oledi Derived from the word "already". Often used in online chatroom by the youth in Malaysia, although in speech, speakers will often pronounce as 'ridy' I eat 'd' 'loh', I eat 'ridy', I eat 'oledi'

le Used to soften an order, thus making it less harsh. Derived from the Chinese expression "了". Give me that le.

one/wan Used as an emphasis at the end of a sentence. It is believed to derive from the Chinese way of suffixing "的" at sentences. Why is he so naughty one ah?
what Unlike British/American English, the word 'what' is often used as an exclamation mark, not just to ask a question. What! How could you do that?
I didn't take it what.

got/have Used as a literal translation from the Malay word 'ada'. The arrangement of words is often also literally translated. The use of this particular particle is widespread in Manglish, where 'got' is substituted for every tense of the verb 'to have'. You got/have anything to do? (Kamu ada apa-apa untuk buat?)
I got already/got/will get my car from the garage. Got or not? (Really?) Where got? (To deny something, as in Malay "Mana ada?", and also in Chinese "Nali you?" as spoken in Malaysia)

Evolution

Speakers of Manglish from the country's different ethnic groups tend to intersperse varying amounts of expressions or interjections from their mother tongue - be it Malay, Chinese or Indian - which, in some cases, qualifies as a form of code-switching.

Verbs or adjectives from other languages often have English affixes, and conversely sentences may be constructed using English words in another language's syntax. People tend to translate phrases directly from their first languages into English, for instance, "on the light" instead of "turn on the light". Or sometimes, "open the light", translated directly from Chinese.

Due to exposure to other languages and dialects, particularly within the national school system, members of a particular ethnic group may be familiar with phrases or expressions originating from languages other than their mother tongue and may, in fact, apply them in their daily speech, regardless of the ethnicity of their audience. This is especially true in the case of interjections and vulgar slang.

Of late, Malaysians have been more creative and more Malay and Chinese words have been converging with English words. It's very simple, just find a Malay or Chinese verb, and add the word "-ing", "-fied", "-able" etc. e.g. "beraking" or defecating from the word Malay word "berak" which means faeces.

LOL.... too many ... lazy to paste jor...

Tips to go UK~~~!

My roommate send me a file bout UK ~
although the writer is going SHU,
but i think almost is the same la....
so, for those who wanna go UK...have a look....^_^

Essential documents
1. Passport
2. Valid driving license (make sure you renew your license before you come as Malaysia driving license can be use in the United Kingdom for a period of 1 year from the day you enter UK. Believe me, a road trip in the UK with your mates are very fun indeed.
3. Passport size photos (bring more)
4. Bank draft and proof of financial evidence as the immigration requires you to show your proof of financial before allowing you to enter the UK.

For your studies:
1. Laptop (mouse, speaker, mic & webcam if needed)
2. Thumb drive or CD-R/W (MUST save a copy for all files every month/week)
3. Two pin plug (MUST!! UK doesn’t have such thing...) for laptop and phone charger, rechargeable batteries... (u will have enough power point at hostel, extension cord not needed)
4. Beg, ALL stationeries & pencil case (expensive there!)
5. Digital dictionary (alternatively you can borrow dictionary from
library)
6.External hardisk ( the connection over here is real good so some of you guys might do some serious downloading, your existing hardisk might not be able to store all the heavy downloads. Go get 1 external hardisk 160GB cost you less than RM400 and of course, this is optional.

For your health & living:
1. Basic medicine for flu, cold, cough, headache, gastric etc (veryimportant)
2. Basic first aid (e.g. yoko yoko...)
3. Nail cutter (here, it cost around 3 pounds = around RM20 each!!!)
4. Toothbrush (toothbrush around RM7+ each in UK)
5. Cotton & cotton buds
6. Some small tissue pack
7. Bath towel
8. Clothes hanger (just bring a few of it.)
9. Clothes brush (pre-paid washing machine is approx 2 pounds for washing and 1 pound for drying, you need to do the laundry once per week or if you can stand it, maybe once every 2 weeks, so you do the math yourself and yes, you can hardly find any brush over here.)
10. Slipper, socks
11. Shaver
12. Lingeries, bras, stocking, panty liners & pad (for gals)
13. Pepper spray or personal alarm (expensive there)
14. Very strong (folded) umbrella (strong winds + crazy weather in UK!REMEMBER TO ASK FOR THE TOUGH ONE.)
15. Digital camera & rechargeable batteries (for ur sweet memories)
* for shower gel, toothpaste, shampoo & lotion, just bring one week supply or travel pack. Here, they have cheaper daily use products
(such as Tesco, they have their own brand of shampoo and shower gel), it's really cheap!
* Sewing kit, can get a set from 1 pound shop, share with friends.
16. For those who cannot sleep without bolster, you can find those compressed bolster at IKEA that going to cost you approx rm50 so that you can put it in your luggage and bring it over or you can get a vacuum bag, put ur bolster inside and vacuum it and bring it over. Vacuum bag is very useful as it helps you to save up a lot of space. You can get it in Going Places(International student card holder has 20% discount for winter clothing) or WinterTime.

Food:

if you still have space for lugg):
1. Special seasoning or dried cooking paste (e.g. curry powder, bak kut teh, and chili sauce, they dont have chili sauce over here)
2. Some special dried food (e.g. chinese mushroom)
3.Some instant noodles for the first few weeks when you are still not comfortable going out to eat and too lazy to cook proper meal.
4.Milo and some local coffee you like as those that are available here tastes a little different from what you usually drink.
*Dont bring biscuit or cookies as the cookies here are seriously 10 times better than Malaysia's cookies and its cheap too.
P/S: I am not sure about this, but please dont bring dried seafood over as I've been told that if you get caught, you going to receive severe penalty for the possesion of it. Ask you parents to send it over.
(Chinese grocery stores have almost everything but just a bit expensive, only
bring things which is special or hard to find - if you still have space for luggage)
* pls DON'T bring your own cutlery, frying pan, cup, mug, plate or
whatever, your student accommodation will provide every single one of you your own set.
* rice cooker? not advisable, we usually boil rice using the pot supplied by the halls and we are quite good at it. You can buy rice cooker here at reasonable price as well)

For partying / clubbing (although not encouraging, but i know u will ignore my advise...):
Not sure whether u wanna attend the freshman party or dinner
organise by ur uni, they normally organise it during the first
month of admission (u might wanna wear tie, coat, leather shoe,
high heels... or put on make up). For my year, they organize a summer beach party so those formal wears are not required.

Pls don’t clubbing too much, it’s not safe to travel at nite!

Banking:
You are not required to open a HSBC account in Malaysia and transfer the money here, its quite troublesome. Just go and buy a bank draft and open an account over here. Usually, SHU will give you guys a bank letter for Natwest. The letter is required for you to open an account as a proof that you are a student over here. Usually they will distribute the letter during enrolment day.

Please go and book for bank appointment A.S.A.P or after you get your bank letter. The system in UK is all based on appointment and if you are late, you going to wait for ages to set up your account. For Natwest, they will give you a debit card(Solo), credit card and cheque book which is rather useful for online purchasing.

Read the terms and condition properly and DONT SIMPLY SET UP DIRECT DEBIT WITHOUT PUTTING MONEY IN YOUR STEP ACCOUNT, YOU WILL BE CHARGE 60 POUNDS FOR IT AND DONT DO LATE PAYMENT FOR YOUR CREDIT CARD, I HAS BEEN CHARGED 160 POUNDS FOR LATE PAYMENT AND HANDLING FEES, DAMN IT!)

For telecommunication:
It's not easy to get a post-paid mobile phone connection as you need a good credit score (i.e, debit card balance) to sign for free phone and contract, so its not advisable to sign up for a phone. You can use ur malaysia mobile and get a pre-paid (there: pay-as-you-go) sim pack from any mobile shop to
kick off your UK "miserable" mobile phone experience. Welcome to the real world.

Trip:
Please dont simply sign up for trips as some of it are really not worthy. Some seniors might try to convince you guys desperately but you can always do some research on your own and ask for second opinion before commiting yourself. Try to have some road trip ( For example, Scotland and Liverpool) it is an experince of a lifetime and it is fun, trust me). You are grown ups now and you dont need to be spoon fed right?

P/S: Man Utd fans can contact me after you reach Sheffield. Most probably, I will be organizing another trip to watch Manchester United and you guys can get to watch the Champions in action in Old Trafford and FYI, I organized a trip to watch MU vs Inter Milan last year and I got better seats comparing to the Student Union's trip, lol. My email is kahwai85@hotmail.com.

ADDITIONAL INFO FOR UK STUDENTS' LIFE:

Tips 2, i forward from chinese.cari.com.my

Tips1-SimCard

各位即将到 JMU 念书的学弟、学妹:

你们到英国这里的时候,有一班 seniors 会在机场接你们。。然后带你们直接到 marybone check in 。。

这时候,请注意我以下要说的话:

你们会看到一个很美的学姐 (super senior) 来。。她每一年都是 summer course helpers 的 president。。而她和她的几位“朋友”这时就会开始他们的“赚钱计划”了。。

怎么个赚钱呢?他们就是 aim 我们这些 juniors 初到英国,什么都不懂。。所以会向 juniors 兜售 o2 pay as you go sim card (就像 malaysia 的 prepaid sim card)。。他们会卖你们一张 5 pounds。。

重点来了,其实这些 pay as you go mobile sim card 在英国这里上网申请就可以拿到了。。还是 FOC (FREE OF CHARGE)

在英国,你们可以轻而易举拿到 FOC 的 pay as you go sim card (任何电讯公司都可以申请。

。不过如果你们只是来这里念三个月的课程,我个人建议你们上网申请 T- MOBILE 的 pay as you go sim card。。然后自己去 top up。。因为打回去 malaysia 蛮便宜的。。

所以,说到这里你们明白为什么我说那班super seniors 赚你们的钱了吧?因为可以 FOC 就拿到了。。但是,他们因为知道 juniors 刚到。。一定什么都不懂,就会听他们说的。。和他们买那些 sim card。。买了之后,里头是没 credit 的咯。。还要自己 top up (minimum top up is 10 - 15 pounds per month)。。为什么我们要白白给那 5 pounds 给他们呢是不是?

我在这里 share 自己的 experience 就是不想再有 juniors 受骗了。。我自己被骗了就算了。。希望你们可以把这个讯息告诉你们的朋友。。

说真的,我和我的朋友还有一群受骗的新生们知道这件事后,真的很生气,也无言

so, 我给你们的建议是,把马来西亚的 sim card 带来这里英国。。到了之后,联络家人你们安全到达。。

当你们完成了 check in 后, 有了确切的地址和房间号码等,就可以上网申请免费的 pay as you go sim card 了

建议你用这个website,有5天和24hours的
伦敦现在介于12-20度,sheffield会更冷,希望你带些厚一点的衣服吧!保重!!

TIPS3-Money
英国和我们一样。。。但是英国1分钱很好用。。。因为他们的东西会卖23分。。。67分。。。 意大利面酱28分。。。沙丁鱼21分。。。玻璃生菜45分。。。面包18分。。。
英镑的分类。。。
1仙=1 PENNY (硬币)
5仙=5 PENCE(硬币)
10仙=10 PENCE(硬币)
50仙=50 PENCE(硬币)
1块=1 POUND(硬币)
5块=5 POUND (纸钞)
10块=10 POUND (纸钞)
20块=20 POUND (纸钞)
50块=50 POUND (纸钞)(千万别拿50英镑去买一个面包,就像你拿马币100买一粒糖,会被骂得狗血淋头。。。)

Tips4-Thing To Bring

Edmond
Nightkids_tai

SHU Trigon是免费洗衣的,但是真要刷子是可以买到的,但我不知道价钱。。。

laptop,pen drive

如上面我所说。。。。

2张bankdraft,一张给学费,一张1000pounds还有一些现金

我曾经告诉大家带两星期的现钱,以免银行来不及处理你们的Bankdraft。。。我开户口加Bankdraft大概一星期半,羊兄用了三个礼拜。。。

那里剪头发会贵吗? 不然我剪光头好了~~

最低我看过的是7镑。。。所以算满贵的。。。我的朋友很多都自己剪。。。

Tips5-Thing To Bring

Totoro2001
Nightkids_tai

-whitening lotion, and facial foam

-cosmetic

Presentation会用到。。。

-formal shirt, shoes(拖鞋,高跟鞋,SPORT SHOES), pants(西装裤,短裤,牛仔裤)

Presentation会用到。。。

-t-shirt

不需要太多,因为你会一直穿着冷衣,不如带多些美美的冷衣更好。。。-冷衣
必备

-风油,风沙丸(保济丸),panadol,黄药膏

应该的。。。

-laptop

带去也好,但是学校也有很多电脑可以用。。。所以如果不想照顾多一样东西可以不用带,如果要再加上网或做功课就带咯,上网50英镑三个月(用lan cable的)(shu unlimited only, ljmu is limited to download capacity, price also base on capacity)

-ball pen, printer, refill ink for printer

Printer, 你有打算读master吗?如果没有,我个人觉得不用带,我们去年是有免费三个月影印的所以没有必要这么麻烦。。。今年就算没有免费的,在图书馆印也不会很贵,5p也就是5分一张,夏日课程并不会用你太多的钱在影印的。。。(for shu only, ljmu I dunno)文具倒是需要带一些去。。。

-眼镜

当然要不然怎么上课,如果是墨镜就看个人了。。。。

-passport size photo X20pcs

不需要这么多啦。。。但是竟然都有了又不重,不是带咯。。。

-桂格麦片

-没有注意那里卖多少钱,帮不到你。。。。

-护唇膏

-必备。。。

-刀

英国卖一套一镑,贵一点的也有。。。但是都不是很利。。。不如带磨刀得更好。。。记得如果要带,放到行李箱里面,别带上飞机。。。(我会建议别带,避免过关时不必要的麻烦)。。。
